Jessica Thava
Director
Bachelor of Accounting (Accounting & Finance) at Swinburne University of Technology
I began my career with Accru in 2007 as part of my Swinburne University placement. Today, I’m proud to be a Director. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of growing alongside the firm, watching it evolve, expand, and continuously adapt to meet the needs of our clients and team. Being part of that journey has been incredibly rewarding.
In 2012, I became a member of Chartered Accountants ANZ, and my passion for Business Advisory has only deepened since. What drew me in and continues to inspire me is the opportunity to work closely with business owners, understand their unique challenges, and provide tailored advice that truly makes a difference. No two clients are the same, and that’s what keeps the work dynamic, meaningful, and fulfilling.
As a senior female leader, I’m especially passionate about mentoring and supporting women in their careers. I understand the challenges that can come with returning to work and navigating parental leave. As a mother of two, achieving a healthy work-life balance has been essential, and I’m grateful that Accru has always supported me in that journey.
One of the things I value most about Accru is our positive and inclusive work culture. I’ve had the chance to work across a wide range of industries and collaborate with incredibly talented people. The variety of projects we take on keeps me challenged and constantly learning, both personally and professionally.
Flexibility has been a cornerstone of my success. Accru’s support has allowed me to balance work, family, and personal growth in a way that feels sustainable and empowering. I truly connect with one of our core values: We Enjoy What We Do. I love what I do, I’m proud of the support I provide to my clients, and I’m continually motivated by the fantastic team around me.

From Intern to Director!
I began my journey at Accru as an undergraduate auditor through Swinburne University’s IBL program. Having transitioned from an Engineering degree to Accounting, I was eager to start my career and gain a real understanding of the path I had chosen. I was not disappointed.
From day one, my experience at Accru was hands-on and engaging. After a brief introduction to the firm on my first day, I was quickly packing my laptop and heading out to a client—an early indication of the practical, client-focused environment that defines Accru.
Following the completion of my IBL placement, I remained with Accru while finishing my degree the following year, working part-time alongside my studies. I then enrolled in the Chartered Accountants program, followed by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) qualification. Several years later, I further expanded my professional credentials by obtaining my Registered Company Auditor (RCA) certification.
One of the standout opportunities during my time at Accru was a secondment in Toronto with a firm internationally affiliated with Accru. This experience provided invaluable overseas exposure and allowed me to build lifelong professional and personal relationships.
Throughout my career, I have worked with a diverse range of clients, including listed and large private companies, not-for-profit organisations, schools, sporting bodies, and many others. This breadth of experience has played a significant role in shaping my professional growth.
There is a saying that “like attracts like,” and Accru’s strong culture reflects this. The firm’s values have attracted clients who are genuinely a pleasure to work with. One of Accru’s core values is “we enjoy what we do,” and this sentiment truly resonates with my own experience.
The opportunities and experience I have gained at Accru have been invaluable. I look forward to continuing to learn, adapt, grow, and enjoy my time at Accru Melbourne in the years ahead.

What's your job about?
Accru Melbourne is a professional services firm with 3 main divisions of Audit, Wealth Management and Business Advisory Services - I work as an Undergraduate Accountant in this team.
On a typical day, I assist with preparing tax returns and financial statements for a range of clients. I also help respond to client queries, liaise with the ATO, and support senior accountants on more complex tax matters. It’s a mix of hands-on learning and teamwork, and no two client files are ever quite the same. Even though I’m still studying, I get to contribute meaningfully and learn through real experience.
What's your background?
I grew up in Melbourne and joined Accru while studying at university, starting off as part-time in a reception and administration role. Being at the front desk gave me a great understanding of the company’s culture, operations and clients. After gaining experience and showing my interest in transitioning to accounting, I was offered a position in the Business Advisory Services team – this has been an exciting highlight which felt like a big step and proud moment in my early career. I’ve now been working as an Undergraduate Accountant for about six months, learning more each day and building my skills with a wide variety of clients.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
I was studying Medical Radiations when I first joined Accru, however am now studying a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in accounting. Based on this, I can say that while a relevant degree helps, success in this role is just as much about attitude as it is about academics. You need to be organised, a good communicator, and genuinely interested in learning, as well as be able to understand basic accounting concepts. Being curious, asking questions, and being proactive will take you a long way in this industry.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
I love seeing how the work we do helps real people, whether it's a client getting a tax refund or a business feeling more confident in their finances. The most rewarding moments are when I finish a client job, double-check everything, and feel proud knowing I contributed to their success.
What are the limitations of your job?
As someone still studying, balancing work and university can be challenging, especially during busy periods like tax season. There’s a lot to learn quickly, and accuracy is critical, so the pressure can feel intense. Time management and the ability to switch between tasks are essential, or it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...
- Don’t worry about having it all figured out right away because your journey will unfold in its own time.
- Say yes to new opportunities, even if they feel outside your comfort zone — every experience adds value and helps you grow.
- Prioritise time with friends and family, because staying grounded and connected is just as important as your professional goals.
