The Programme 

Maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for passengers in the aircraft cabin is a fundamental aspect of aviation that includes both ventilation and air quality aspects and is one of the main functions of Air Systems.  
 
Smoke detection in the cargo compartment is an important aspect from the aircraft safety point of view.  
 
In the context of sustainable aviation, prediction of hydrogen concentration in fuel cells is of paramount importance.  
 
Therefore, CFD plays a crucial role by predicting airflow distribution within the cabin, providing initial smoke levels and smoke spread in the cargo and predicting hydrogen concentration in green propulsion systems which accelerates solution development, reduces the need for extensive flight testing, and helps optimize sensor/detector placement for accurate data collection at critical locations. 
 
Role: 
 
Conduct literature reviews: 

• Modeling/resolving of aircraft cabin flow via LES/DES techniques.
• Smoke modeling techniques specifically for detection time modeling  

Develop CFD methodologies: 

• To accurately simulate airflow, temperature distribution and comfort parameters 
  within the cabin. 
• To develop smoke models with available best practices. 

Required Skills and Abilities 

Key Skills: 

• Strong fundamentals on Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, Heat Transfer. 
• Sound knowledge of CFD (computational fluid dynamic) methods and tools. 
• Preferably taken Turbulence modeling as coursework. 

Soft Skills: 

• Teamwork and excellent communication skills. 
• Willingness to learn new skills, self-development and Problem-solving 
  orientation. 
• Fail-fast mindset and Solutions approach. 

Qualification:  

• Pursuing (final year) Master's degree in Thermal Science and Engineering or 
  equivalent. 

Duration - 6 months
